They were my other eyes that could see above the clouds; my other ears that could hear above the winds. They were the part of me that could reach out into the sea. They both told me a thousand times over that I was their reason for being; by the way they would rest against my leg; by the way they would thump their tails at my smallest smile; by the way they would show hurt when I would leave without taking them. When I was wrong, they were delighted to forgive. When I was angry, they would be clowns to make me smile. When I was happy, they were joy unbounded. When I was a fool, they ignored it. When I would succeed, they would brag. Without them, I am only another woman. With them, I was all-powerful. They were loyalty itself. They taught me the meaning of devotion. With them, I knew a secret comfort and a private peace. They both brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. Their heads on my knee could heal my human hurts. Their presence by my side was protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. They have promised to wait for me, whenever, wherever, in case I need them.
