About me:
Princesses are usually perfect, their background and lifestyle reek of good fortune and old money. Ideally, in a perfect world I would have been such a princess, but as fate would have it, this princess was not born in a castle with a silver spoon. I don't walk out my door picture perfect everyday and there are times when life overwhelms me. I've never been one to value people by possessions or who they are, because I've always believed that if God is not a respecter of persons then I definitely have no reason to be. Textbook definitions of a Black American Princess (B.A.P.) speak of a woman who is synonymous with a J.A.P. (Jewish American Princess)--exposed to a life of wealth and privilege and at times, painstakingly pretentious. I'd rather to be the peculiar princess. You know the one that has rose from the concrete to a life of beauty and contentment. The quirky one who would deny the very categorization, yet embody the style and poise. I happen to be the clumsiest of the princesses. I still hope and wish to walk like Cinderella, but I don't float on magic fairy dust and slide across ballroom floors to the waltz, with matchless grace. I stumble and fall sometimes, I've been brushed off and lifted up and learned how to walk again. I give it my best shot and hope for the best. I don't always win, but I understand that I'm a winner. I experience rainy days sometimes, but I understand that rain makes the ground fertile and helps nature to continue it's beautiful cycle of death and rebirth. Each day I am learning more and more about life and what it means to truly be a Princess. I am learning that confidence should be worn like a good coat on a winter day and humility should hang just as well. I am learning to forgo my self-critical qualifications of what "would" make me better, and accepting the innate, genuine, authentic princess that I was born to be...you know, the sometimes silly, foolish, clumsy, and at times, irrational princess that probably wouldn't get picked out of the prince's line up at first glance. I would've been the one sitting on the steps at the ball writing poetry rather than schmoozing with the royals. Call me crazy, but that prince would have had to find me up in my attic jammin' out, burning incense, and sipping on a green tea....finding freedom despite the evil step mother's plan to make my life miserable. Suffice to say, that despite the odds there is always a way to rise above them and up against them there are always ways of escape. Princesses in pretty pink dresses resting in gazebos with the slippers in the air are not common and peculiar princesses, like myself, are rising from the dust everyday. If you look closely you may find one next door to you, down the street, or even in your reflection. .. .. .. ..
