This is my review from my September 27th, 2009 show at The Underground Wonder Bar. Walton St Chicago IL Kalin Daniel A friend called me and told me to take the time to check out this artist, "BLACKJACK SASS," at The UNDERGROUND WONDER BAR @ 10 E. Walton St, Chicago IL. So, I marked my calendar for one of the Sunday nights that she plays. I was told that she goes on around 8:00pm and does 3 sets. I got in my car and headed down to Chicago, after leaving my date with a good friend of mine (She had to work at 6:00am so I went down by myself). Underground Wonder Bar was pretty easy to find, and the parking was fast. When I pulled up, this hot chick was out front, smoking a cigarette- great start to my Sunday Night! When I walked up, she put her hand out to me and said, "You must be toNy O..." I had never seen BlackJack Sass before, and it was her! "Thanks for coming out tonight," she said. I felt appreciated. We walked in, and she moved right up to the stage and grabbed her guitar (She also plays the piano and drums). Right from the beginning, I could tell she is fearless and has a great stage presence. She started to play, and I caught myself dreaming as she wove her music around me. Her straight-forward lyrics penetrate your soul. One song in particular, "Last Message," made me tear up. BJS has a lot of great song's like "Hollow" and "Glass," just to name a few. I asked her about the song "Hallow", and she told me the story of how that song came to be. I felt like we were on the same page. When she performs, she tells the stories of all her songs; I love that. It made it more enjoyable to envision her going through that song. Her style of music is Folk Alternative; it is worth your time to see her perform. BlackJack Sass, Thank you for the struggle you have gone through as a artist. Your lyrics moved my soul the night I saw you. Never sell out! I look forward to see you play again.
