"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Blurbs

About me:

picture it, sometime in the mid 80s, after the typical day of elementary school highlights like spelling tests, p.e. and the questions from the other kids about what i was, i came home with a mission. i sat down, crayon in hand, and decided to color someone who looked just like me. i picked up a black crayon and a white crayon. after all, that’s what i was. my mom is white and my father is black. here we go…little bit of black mixed with a little bit of white and to my complete surprise out comes GRAY! GRAY?! i wasn’t gray!! what happened?? i went to my mother, after all she does know everything, and told her about this tragedy. i demanded to know her explanation. she showed me brown...

i knew all the standard words: biracial, multiracial, mixed, mulatto…and while i am all of these things none of them made me feel the way brownbaby did. while correct, they still felt disconnected and didn’t make for the best playground conversation. brownbaby was a word my mother and i used with love. this was a word that i didn’t mind telling the other kids about. they seemed to get it. i started to look forward to their questions about why i didn’t look anything like my mom. it was fun for me to share. it was something that felt personal and empowering. eventually i realized using this word allowed me to answer people’s questions and identify myself without using race definitions. it became about who i was, and after a while that seemed to be what others were really interested in anyway.

about brownbaby.org:

now, how does this all translate to a website? a while ago i had this idea. as a brownbaby, we have a unique opportunity to help others as well as ourselves. we are fortunate enough to view the world through multiple eyes. who better to begin conversations and define how we view race than those of us who are racially undefined? brownbaby.org is here to serve as an online forum, information network and marketplace used to encourage positive change in the community. it is a movement, an idea, a feeling and above all a place to call home. we are creating a dialogue in a fun and light environment. through education and encouragement, family, friends and others in the community can learn about biracial/multiracial young people and the issues surrounding them. my hope is that brownbaby.org will build confidence in biracial/multiracial people of all ages about who they are...that we can choose to celebrate and appreciate our differences, instead of feeling alienated by them. by erasing racial lines and divides we can raise public awareness about the issues of social unity and equality. this is the brownbaby frame of mind.

create the dialogue. be the change.
