    AUGUST ChessClub

It was always gonna be hard to follow our 1st Birthday in July...
So thank God for a man from South West London, a woman from Southend and a brilliant band from...New York...

    YEASAYER

Most of the packed out crowd had been anticipating this perfromance for sometime and by the time Yeasayer began playing their epic-tribal-prog-synth the excitement was massive...the applause was actually deafening.

    Theoretical Girl

Having only seen her with her band, we were all gagging for a bit of acoustic Theoretical Girl action. And amazingly she was just as good tuned down. She has completely mastered both of her acts brilliantly which is rare.

Thank you so much to everybody, especially GoodBooks for DJing. It was such a great night...and yet again the bouncer stopped everybody dancing at the end during Michael Jackson...bastard! See you next month.

  • ChessClub 1st Birthday! Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong//Sunny Day Sets Fire//Andrew Davie

    OUR 1ST BIRTHDAY PARTY!

Its been a year since our first ever night - with the legendary music genius Damon Albarn...and what better way to finish this wonderful year, than by putting on a band that are certain to become legendary.

Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong most definitely lived up to the hype surrounding them (I had to go on Capital FM drivetime and do a 'shout out' about the gig!). They unfortunately had to race against the clock but Joe at least took time to warn us about the Chinese accross the road.

Sunny Day Sets Fire were fucking awesome...super talented and super nice people, they have always been ChessClub favourites but are now even better in our minds. They deserve to be HUGE.

Andrew Davie has been a friend of ours for a while now. And I must admit I visit his page at least once a day...no lies. He has an incredible voice and all his songs are really coming together thanks to his band The Lucky Egg, so look out for Andrew in the future...go to his page (myspace.com/paedosinspeedos - amazing!) and listen to the orgasmically good new song Chasing Reason...do it now!!!

JOE LEAN & JING JANG JONG

This was half the crowd...including Joe's mum!

We also presented Nadia and Sara of Young & Lost with a crisp £20 note for DJing...this represented a new era for ChessClub as they have been amazing to us over the past 2 years, letting us DJ all over the map and helping us out with various things. So this was a big moment as we had never paid them before...

THANK YOU to everyone who came...it was a brilliant 1st Birthday, and it has been a great year!

Look out for next month's line up - It could be special......

  • Richard Swift // Florence and the Machine // King Charles @ The Social

    WOW!

Well on 18th June we had a complete BONANZA of exciting new talent, including some real life Americans from America!

Some of Smashing Pumpkins even came to watch (SERIOUSLY!).

King Charles played first. He's one of our favourite people EVER! He makes you STOP. LOOK. AND LISTEN. like crossing the road.

    WHO WEARS SHORT SHORTS?!!?

    KING CHARLES WEARS SHORT SHORTS!!

Then there was Florence and the Machine.

Her voice was so big and strong The Social began to shake. I had to use Will Chess Club as a support beam. I strapped him across the roof using a lock of King Charles hair.

    Make it Santori Times...

    FRUSTRATED Florence!

Finally was Richard Swift.  Hes gonna be big news. He used a piano, guitar, bass synth keyboard and a VERY old school drum machine. oh wait....AND A VOCODER!! (to sound like a daft punk robot).

Hes a real American hero. Fantastico!

We thank all our guests who came and played for us! Especially Richard Swift, we hope it was a good warm up for Glastonbury, V festival and all the other big ones hes hitting this Summer.

Also, thanks to all who came and watched! It was a brillaint night.

  • Chess Club at LOCK TAVERN - Thom Stone//Jay Jay Pistolet//Beans On Toast//Alan Pownall

CHESSCLUB AT LOCK TAVERN - CAMDEN

    Half of our beautiful crowd.

A lovely night as always, down at the Chess Club. Except it was FREE!!! We enjoyed the musical sounds of our booked artists Thom Stone, Jay Jay Pistolet and Alan Pownall and an epic guest appearance by Jay from Beans On Toast (not to be confused with Justin aka. Jay Jay Pistolet...bizarre I know).

First up was Mr. Pownall. What a joyous fellow this man is, with musical talent to match. He serves his serious stares and meaningful lyrics with a bit of hilarity on the the side for dipping....delicious indeed.

Next was Monsieur Pistolet, aka. Jay Jay Pistolet, aka. Jay Jay and the Pistolas, aka. Justin...fuck knows what his real name is. All we know about him is that he is fantastic...and that you should never talk when he plays...

    Because this happens...

He can be sexy too though.

Unfortunately all these photos are from one side...its tough being the photographer and the promoter...trying to get good shots without getting in people's way. Oh well...

Next was the epic surprise performance from Beans On Toast...sure enough, the room was beaming with smiles. Fuck the smoking ban indeed.

Ending the show perfectly was Thom Stone...a Chess Club favourite. He my look like the lead singer of The View mixed with Luke Pritchard (haha) but he has more musical talent than both of them put together x100000.

His set was a complete one off as his string and amplifier broke halfway through so he borrowed Jay Jay's guitar, forced the crowd into a stunned silence and played completely unplugged, without even a microphone, for the rest of the night....beautiful it was.

The Pyrrah Girls DJ'd for a while as well but unfortunately I didn't get a shot of their beautiful faces.

We also went out afterwards, it was hilarious.
    Nathan loves licking my face

I don't know who this guy on the left is and I don't know what we were arguing about...Thom finds it funny though.

We were ecstatic at how it went. It was definitely one of our finest nights yet. The crowd were perfect and The Lock Tavern was lovely as always.

Thank you to all who came. You made my day. I had just returned from Tokyo and you gave me the lift I needed to battle it through the terrifying Jet Lag.
