Killer Rootical version from lauded dubstep crew Clouds with the melancholy steppers cut 'Elders' featuring a well known vocal line over a rolling one note skankers melody and some suitably hazy green vibes reminding us of the wicked L.V dub cut on their recent Hyperdub 12". The Ras Amerlock mix fleshes out the clouds original into a swarm of almost electro-acoustic abstraction with some wicked dub processing, coming on like a prime Adrian Sherwood rerub while Rootah's severely pitched down version pushes the bass into places most producers just can't reach. The final mix from Waddada is the one for the darker dubstep heads, hitting harder and heavier than his 7"s for Police in Helicopter and is probably the best track he's put his name to. Awesome stuff - Recommended!
Very interesting 12" from Finland's Clouds on the consistently excellent Ramp recordings. Slotting in nicely with the labels recent A+R moves from the Pattie Blingh 10" to that sick Zomby 12", Clouds sidestep their recent efforts for Argon and 2nd Drop and come with a wickedly smart 2-step motion similar to the swinging shuffle of Martyn or an old Horsepower productions style, mixed with piquant IDM melodics. It's come as a bit of a surprise and we're pretty sure you'll be well into this. The flipside is equally ace, with Ras G of Ninja Tune and Plug Research fame providing a killer wonky instro-hiphop mix with rude soundsystem vibes plugged in. One of the best 12"s you'll hear this week. Recommended!
RAMP013 - ATM Review
One of Finland's finest exports after Reindeer and Moomins, is of course production and DJ duo Clouds. With key releases on Noppa, 2nd Drop and Argon, the cheeky scamps continues to flaunt their fine creative minds, delivering quirky, forward thinking and genuinely cracking music. Timekeeper employs techniques like syncopated 2-step beats, flirtatious melodica and playful keys which make my legs jig uncontrollably. Flying Lotus buddy, Ras G, is given the keys to the toy cupboard and pulls out a blinking, whirling mess of a remix, which challenges and delights in many wonky hip hop ways. It's not easy to dance to, but when it sounds this good who gives a flying Fisher Price?
RAMP013 - Mixmag Review
Intricate Finland-meets-Los-Angeles weirdness
Finnish guys making delicate, clockwork-sounding 2-step? Yup. Spooky tinkling melodies? Yup. A remix by Flying Lotus's best mate Ras G that sounds like he's smashed it into the tiniest pieces, roughly reassembled it with sellotape, then added airhorns and rewinds? You got it. This is too damned WEIRD for most DJ boxes, but we absolutely love it.
Mount Kimbie - Maybes (James Blake Remix), is that the same track on the Mount Kimbie remixes part one???
