Bio
Dan Shears & The Velveteen Orkestra have the ability to make audiences swoon while, at the same time, casting forth an air of unease with their intoxicating hybrid of rich romanticism and brutal intensity. Embodying the essences of European folk and bluegrass as well as echoing the guitar-based indie stylings of The Smiths and Radiohead, DS&VO can gently pluck at your heartstrings while delicately slipping them around your neck. The band formed in 2009 from the recording project of South London born songwriter Daniel Shears and played their first live show in July of that year. Shears joined up with drummer and producer, Andrea Adriano, and set about assembling an orchestra, essentially from the street, and in May 2010 Dan Shears & The Velveteen Orkestra released a six-track debut entitled 'The Eternal Mystery of the Human Heart'. The EP attracted much industry attention and began being stocked on the shelves of independent record shops all over the UK as the band continued to captivate audiences, playing shows at KOKO and The 100 Club in London as well as UK Festivals The Great Escape and The Big Chill. 'TAKE UP ARMS', the band's first full-length album, is well on its way to completion and looks set to enrapture and compel listeners further still. Shears likens the recording process to "Dressing flesh on a hanging skeleton until you're stood there with a living, breathing person that you've created" and describes the new songs as, as the title suggests, "A series of battle cries, dark thoughts, violent ambition and love ballads with sharp objects concealed beneath their coats" QUOTES "Shears has a beautifully evocative voice which refuses to be ignored... these orkestral manoeuvres in the dark are set to run and run" - XYZ MAGAZINE "The Eternal Mystery of the Human Heart... Lush arrangements go hand in glove with the forceful yet delicate vocals of Dan Shears. Some great lyrics make this self-released album pretty much a winner" - JUMBO RECORDS (Leeds) "The voice of Dan Shears drops jaws. It pushes further than the obvious comparisons and soars above the clouds. He breathes his songs and has audiences holding their breath, waiting for the next twist. His range will stop you in your tracks" - KIERON PEPPER (Drummer with THE PRODIGY) "Dan's music is warm, enchanting, delicate and beautiful. The Girl The Boy Adored showcases Dan's intriguing and mysterious vocals while weaving a wonderful tale of love, passion and yearning. Great songwriting talent is shown here as well as a very promising up and coming musician" - ACE (Guitarist with ..SKUNK ANANSIE) "A true artist, a voice with a purity of tone I've not heard from a male singer before. A young man with a real potential for great success" - MARK FLANNERY (Producer:- U2, BLACK SABBATH, SONIC YOUTH, DEF LEPPARD) "His live performance was so sweet... his voice was like an angel" - JUNON MAGAZINE (Japan) "His lyrics pluck at your heartstrings as if casting a lovesick spell and his sweet falsetto vocals have the power to reduce any audience to stunned silence" – James Watts (XYZ Magazine) "Vocally, Shears recalled Matt Bellamy's slower and more ponderous tones but the Muse similarities ended there; this band nurture melodies instead of wielding them like an axe"– Adrian Imms (The Argus, Brighton) CONTACT: danshearsmusic@gmail.com -

10 of 415MoreHi Dan
Saw you on Sunday at Lancaster Library...... Loved it, amazing.
You made me laugh (in a good way) and then, when I was expecting frankly not much, I was completely moved by your voice.
Thank you.
Hoping to come to Manchester and see you and the wonderful Charlene again next month. Enjoy the tour
Joolz

Hey Joolz, sorry for my slow reply, Myspace doesn't seem to work like it used to but I'm very grateful for your comment. I'm still not actually confirmed for the tour in April yet but I hope to be on it supporting Charlene again, we had a brilliant time. The tour was fantastic and I can't wait to do another one. Thanks again man
Dan

Suicidal sea shanties and medieval jiggery – new tracks from “The Coracle & The Albatross” EP up now {_}
thankyou! :) i really enjoyed the gig..would love to come again sometime..let me know if theres something particularly worth coming to :) x
It's a cool place, different to the hustle and bustle of London. I've not been gigging, no. I don't have a band or anything, would love to start one up.. At the same time, I like the creative control I have with doing things on my own. I just lack the equipment and vocal ability necessary for that to work live! How did you join up with the Velveteen Orchestra?
Anytime and thanks for yours too! Cool - I look forward to hearing it. Looks like you're making quite a name for yourself!
I've been in Bristol since Sep 2005 - went to uni then just stayed here. How long have you been in Brighton?
Love the songs, Dan. I remember back in Coma days, Rain of Bombs/Belladonna blew me away and it's got even better! A special mention to 'The Girl The Boy Adored' - that song is mesmerising. Will definitely have to check you out live sometime. I could use some inspiration!
new foxpockets track tells the tale of Wojtek the soldier bear – his ghost haunts us
