  • Bio

hey all you MY Spacers... This is where I put my Bio,. Now when i read this of my own site it seems pretty strange, and when anybody talks about themselves they always sound like a wanker... I have done everything below, but if you want to form your own opinion then check out one of my gigs some time. I have edited it with some comments... A leading DJ and figure in Australian dance music John first rose to prominence when he won the DMC Mixing Competition in Victoria in 1988 (which he again won in 1989). (yes, I did win the Vic ones many moons ago, that's what really got me into mixing). Since that time John has remained at the top of his game. (well I hope I can do it after so long). His mixing, scratching and tricks from the early days are still prominent in his sets today, utilising CDJ 1000s, decks, FX and accapellas in the mix of his up, funky, club sounds. (yep, if there is a trick with a deck or a CD player I like to figure it out...I don't always get it right but I am always trying new things which I think when it comes to mixing everybody should do). Vicious, the record label that John co-owns, was established in 1990 and has also been at the forefront of the Australian Dance scene since its inception. (the labels one of my proudest achievements, started with friends and business partners Andy Van and Colin Daniels. We have released lots of aussie music and have played a small part in many Australian DJ and producers getting further in their career). On a production front John was one quarter of the team behind Blackout, whos Gotta Have Hope single was a worldwide club hit back in 1998. (the tune with the big 2001 A Space Odyssey theme in the middle, remember). With DJ Andy Van the two have lent their remixing talents to a host of Australian and international artists including remixes for Defected UK & Todd Terrys Sound Design label, not to mention artists such as Madison Avenue. It was Andy Vans Madison Avenue success which took Andy around the world performing and DJing, at which time John became the Managing Director at Vicious (the label they own with Colin Daniels). As well as concentrating on the business side of music John continued to build his DJing throughout Australia, beginning a residency at One Love Melbourne back in 2001 and playing regularly outside of his home state of Victoria. (I basically started travelling lots for gigs in about 1998, but used to play in Sydney years before at The Underground). At the last Australian Dance Music Awards John was voted by the public as Victorias Best DJ and Vicious won the Best Label award, following up with top 20 positions in every In The Mix top 50 Australian DJs pole since 2004! John has also mixed a host of compilations since 2002 including A Night Out with John Course and Andy Van, A Night Out with Vicious Grooves, The 2004 Ministry Of Sound Annual, One Love Volume 1, the Ministry Sessions Vol 1, The 2005 Ministry Of Sound Annual, Vicious Cuts Vol 1 and in June of 2005 Volume 2 of the Ministry Sessions. The 2006 Annual was released in November 2005 again followed by Vicious Cuts 3 (March) and the Sessions Vol 3 for Ministry in May. The 2007 Annual and Sessions 4 followed, as did Vicious Cuts Volume 2, Sessions 4 and the 2008, 2009 and most recently the 2010 Annual. In late 2004 John teamed up with production partner mrTimothy, together working on a host of remixes for Australian, New Zealand and international artist under the name of Electro Funk Lovers. Their remixes, including T Funks Be Together, the Fast Crews I Got and Swing by Savage, have consistently charted in the top 10 of the Australian Club Charts. The first Electro Funk Lovers was released in April 2007 at selected stores on limited edition 12" vinyl so get out there and find one :-) EFL also remixed the entire Katie Noonan album "Skin" and saw it re-released as "Second Skin" with Katies blessing. New material due in early 2010 so look out! (Yes, been really digging the studio, look forward to some original productions seeing the light of day soon). John's 8 year residency at Australias leading house club One Love in Melbourne come to an end when the weekly club closed on Boxing Day 2009, but he continues to play regularly at Q Bars rocking Thursday night session and plays all over the country at various one off gigs in between with two tours for the Ministry Of Sound each year. Constantly in demand for guest spots throughout his home state of Victoria and the rest of Australia he has completed gigs in Dubai, London, Asia and returns every year to Mykonos in Greece in July for a couple of great gigs at the infamous "Club Paradise" as part of a European tour. • Influences

Stacks of DJ's over the years have influenced me with particular sets I have heard. Basically the DJ's who play what they love and push new music. Also the DJ's and producers who keep their feet on the ground no matter what their success. Early influences with mixing / scratching etc would be CJ Mackintosh, Cash Money, DJ Red Alert (I used to listen to his New York FM Radio show off tape!), and acts such as Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, Malcom McLaren etc. DJ's who I dig today include Australian guys like Andy Van, Grant Smillie, Colin McMillan, Dirty South, Goodwil, MrT, Phil K (technically amazing), Dexter (a modern day turntable wizz), Shamus and too many more to mention. Axwell & Tom Novy both recently rocked and are top guys. I also liked Tommy Trash's recent sets. More to update soon...
