Bio
Dragons Power Up! is a rock group from St. Paul, Minnesota, formed in 2005 by multi-instrumentalists Mike Coyne, Dan Ries, Mike Ries, and Chris Tures. Each member drawing from his own corner of musical influences, their sound marries loose, noisy guitars with tightly-wound rhythm section and vocals atypical of today's indie rock landscape. DPU! twist indie rock conventions by subtly blending the sonic freakouts of shoegaze and noise rock, unorthodox song structures and signatures of post rock, the rhythmic, atonal punch of post-punk, the love of hooks and melodies of the 60s, psychedelica, blues and whatever else they may bring into the mix. The result is both familiar and distinctly new - album rock for an age of MP3s. Some of the bands DPU! has taken cues from include: the Beatles, the Who, Can, Pink Floyd, Queens of the Stone Age, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Pearl Jam, Deerhoof, the Constantines, to name a few. They've been likened to Gang of Four, Pavement, Brian Eno, Captain Beefheart amongst others. They self-released their debut album "This Way to Gunshire" in 2006, later catching the attention of local indie label Guilt Ridden Pop (Gospel Gossip, Volante, Malachi Constant, Claps, Kill to Kill, etc) in 2008. Their sophomore full-length, "Brace for the Bloom" was released on GRP in March of 2010. They have shared the stage with countless Twin Cities bands as well as Titus Andronicus, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Sleepy Sun, Locksley, Lydia, Free Energy and Semi-Precious Weapons. DPU! has a deep-abiding love for their hometown and the underground community within it, regularly playing shows at Twin Town venues. -

Dragons Power Up! is a rock group from St. Paul, Minnesota, formed in 2005 by multi-instrumentalists Mike Coyne, Dan Ries, Mike Ries, and Chris Tures. Their sound marries loose, noisy guitars with a controlled, precise rythym section, soaring vocals and raw, thoughtful lyricsm.
They self-released their debut album “This Way to Gunshire” in 2006, later catching the attention of local indie label Guilt Ridden Pop (Gospel Gossip, Volante, Malachi Constant, Claps, Kill to Kill) in 2008. Their sophomore full-length, “Brace for the Bloom” was released on GRP in March of 2010.
WHAT SOME FOLKS SAID ABOUT BRACE FOR THE BLOOM:
Smart hard driving guitar-driven modern rock. St. Paul, Minnesota's Dragons Power Up! have a great overall sound that is sometimes harsh and sometimes complex and unpredictable. The songs are driven by great rhythms and wonderfully jagged electric guitars...and the vocals sound very much unlike what a twenty-first century vocalist should sound like (that is, of course, a major compliment). A word of caution...this is not easy music. If you want something you can easily swallow on the first listen this probably isn't the right pill for you. We had to spin Brace for the Bloom about a half dozen times before the songs began to sink in. But sink in they did...and we eventually found ourselves totally immersed in this band's cool and inviting universe. So many modern bands are carbon copies of one another - That isn't the case here. The guys in Dragons Power Up! have their own sound and style...and over time these songs stick in your head. We love this shit. Top pick. - BabySue.com
Though at first glance one might think a band named Dragons Power Up! must be a group of Nintendo-loving 8-bit tweakers, they are actually an increasingly tight post-rock band worth taking seriously. With hooky vocals drenched in reverb, jutting electric guitar riffs, and dirty bar-pop melodies, Dragons Power Up! have been earning accolades for their latest album, Brace for the Bloom, - Andrea Swensson, City Pages
...what I have heard so far of their sophomore album, Brace for the Bloom, is impressive. “Filter Valve” is a short, gut-punch of a song, all angularly jutting guitars and rhythm shifts. It’s mostly punk infused rock, but I’ll be damned if there isn’t a strong funk presence as well in that pounding bassline and jangly guitar chords. — Jon Behm, Reviler
WHAT SOME FOLKS SAID ABOUT DPU!:
"Driving guitars, off-kilter leads, soaring vocals, and occasional rhythmic gearshifts, all adding up to a catchy slew of pop songs. DPU have tightened up well since I first heard them a couple years ago, which makes for some well-crafted songs." - Tigger Lunney, City Pages
"…[DPU!] prove their indie rock chops with undeniable ferocity. This is balls-to-the-wall, no-bullshit, real rock and roll...you’re in for a real treat onstage...Yes, even St. George would be proud of this white-hot, thrashing beast of a band. Great stuff." - Pulse of the Twin Cities
"With a serpentine, low-fi sound coiled round a flaming pile of reverb sits Dragons Power Up!, a Minneapolis-based beast of a band with one mission - to rock." - Perfect Porridge
"I was unexpectedly treated to the prog-rock stylings of the charismatic Dragons Power Up! This Way to Gunshire…, is testament to their fun, distorted, rock-and-roll view of the world. Consisting of enough twists and turns to get even the most gallant knight lost on his way to save a princess, This Way to Gunshire is a great listen." - Toby Cryns, Lunch Of Champions
