With a sound most often compared to Dwight Yoakam, Jason and the Scorchers, The Cramps and Jay Hawkins, The Hick’ry Hawkins Band unites fans of Honky Tonk, Country and Punk Rock, delivering a dynamic, highly-acclaimed catalog of both humorous and heart-wrenching songs with a Southern draw that consistently packs the crowds into venues across the Carolinas. Their distinctive, hip-shaking Rockabilly sound combines a deeply-rooted Country tradition with a hard-edged Punk mentality, explaining why lead singer Hick’ry Hawkins was named “the David Lee Roth of Country music” by the Knoxville Sentinel. Singing songs about hard times, whiskey and women; reflecting on winning and losing at the game of love; and respecting the strong influence of great Country icons like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Steve Earle; veteran musician Hick’ry Hawkins has naturally hollered, strummed and crooned his way to the top of today’s Honky Tonk music circuit. .. .. ..The Tour.. .. Currently residing in the New York City area, when he was based out of Charlotte, NC, singer/songwriter Hick’ry Hawkins toured heavily across the Southeastern U.S. for the past 15 years with both his current line-up and his former backing band, Sidemeat. He has played at many venues prominent in today’s music circuit. .. .. ..The Talent.... Hick’ry Hawkins sings lead vocals and plays rhythm guitar, backed up by a talented ensemble of musicians. Hick’ry has shared the stage with an impressive variety of both regionally and nationally recognized talent, including: .. .. • Southern Culture on The Skids.. • Robbie Fulks.. • David Allan Coe.. • Unknown Hinson.. • Cigar Store Indians.. • The Gourds.. • Mudhoney.. • Cowboy Mouth.. • Backsliders.. • Whiskeytown.. • Hank III.. • Fugazi.. • GWAR .. .. ..Discography.... HICK'RY AND YOU - keep sendin' them in!.. .. .. .. PRESS QUOTES.. Michael Miller - The State Newspaper - Columbia, SC.. “A lot of today's country singers like to talk about a down-home upbringing, rock 'n' roll roots, a punk influence and how they bring it all together in some kind of hillbilly hybrid that rocks as much as it twangs. Hick'ry Hawkins doesn't talk about it or think about it. Hell, he probably doesn't even care about it. He just knows that Hank Sr. was a punk rocker before there was such a thing, and Sid Vicious was more of a country outlaw than any Nashville hat act will ever by. Hick'ry has a way of channeling those attitudes into a music that slams away like a barstool tossed against a roadhouse wall... .. .. Visitnc.com – October 2007.. “If your taste tends toward old-time country and rockabilly, catch local act the Hick’ry Hawkins Band.”.. .. .. ETV Presents “Juke Joints and Honky Tonk Legends: A Southern Musical Celebration” – March 26, 2007.. (Program aired on “Carolina Stories” on PBS on June 7th at 9pm).. “This program is an excursion into a larger-than-life culture with roots that trace back to traditional African and folk music. It explores this nonconformist genre and the people who seek to preserve it. From the famed Chitlin’ Circuit to Tobacco Roads to the bluegrass Kerosene Circuit, viewers will tap into the stories of local artists such as blues master Drink Small, Bill Wells, owner of Bill’s Pickin’ Parlor in West Columbia, and honky tonk’s resident pied piper Hick'ry Hawkins.” .. .. .. BILLBOARD MAGAZINE - January 11, 2003.. South Carolina hellbilly Hick'ry Hawkins is kicking up some dust with an ornery brand of hard-twang country loaded with attitude. Hawkins moans with pride on "Country Guitar Pickin’ Man" and his "Holy Ghost Conductor" combines Cash-style shuffle with gospel sensibilities. The title cut is reverb-drenched rock with a mean streak, and "Dentures on the Dash" is a heartfelt tribute to a certain kind of, uh, lady. Elsewhere, "Waylon" is a surprisingly touching and well-played nod to Mr. Jennings, and "I Sold My Soul and Ain't Got Paid" and "I Was Just One" are weepers in the Bakersfield style. Hawkins has a beer-soaked sense of humor, "Up Them Stairs" promotes the glories of "ladies first" and "Just Cut a Big One in Nashville" clears the air on his opinion of Music City. Musicianship is mostly solid and sometimes great, if production is at times muddy, but this guy definitely has something more going on than just a novelty act. –RW.. .. .. Yes Weekly (Greensboro, NC) – Brian Clarey, Editor.. “Ink and dirt rise to the surface at Heavy Rebel Weekend” 7/10/07.. “….At 3 a.m. in the 14th floor of the Marriott, a man named Hick'ry Hawkins uncases his burled wood guitar. He's wearing weathered cowboy boots, a belt buckle as big as a plate, a pristine white cowboy hat and a Captain America tattoo on his shoulder. And Hick'ry Hawkins begins to play his guitar for an audience of six, seated on beds and chairs in this hotel room. The tune: "I Want You to Want Me." Yeah, that's right - he's pulling out some Cheap Trick, imbuing it with a touch of the trailer park with slow strums and a beautiful rasp to his voice that carries into the next number, "Surrender." "Your mama's all right/ your daddy's all right/ they just seem a little weird/ surrender...." It goes on like this: "Dead Flowers," "Born in the USA," "Pink Houses," "Every Rose Has its Thorn." He plays an original, something more congruous with the hat and boots that makes reference to rattlesnake eyes, the devil's right hand, the tree of original sin. Is it country? Rock? Folk? A blues-style boast? And why do I have to put a name to it anyway? And there in the hotel room as the morning sun starts to lighten the sky I have this epiphany. It's about the music and the attitude and the style, how it's all connected in the most fundamental of ways, how one man and one guitar can evoke feelings of pride, giddiness, sorrow and lust in a hotel room in the early morning just as a trio can rock a stage in a basement and turn the room on its ear. It's all part of the same thing, or so it seems to me at dawn on the 14th floor of the Marriott. And then Hick'ry Hawkins tunes his guitar for one more number before we all turn it in. He plays the opening chords of "This Land is Your Land," sings the first verse with his eyes closed and his soul laid bare. And the six of us sitting on beds and hotel-grade furniture snap from our reverie. We get it together, one by one, and by the time he hits the first chorus, we're all singing along.”.. .. .. BLITZ MAGAZINE ARTICLE UP THEM STAIRS: HICK’RY HAWKINS HEADLINES CONEY ISLAND SHOW In the wake of the second generation assertion of the garage rock ethic that gave rise to the punk rock and new wave movements of the mid to late 1970s, there came a steady stream of aspirants who, in deference to their first generation inspirations, would profess their intentions to carry on the work of their predecessors and make their mark in whatever their respective musical niche happened to be. However, many such proclamations ultimately proved to be what Paul Revere and the Raiders once astutely referred to as, “Too much talk, not enough action”. For while such bravado indeed reflected in most cases a noble sentiment, more often than not, their musical wherewithal to execute accordingly was circumvented by a failure to understand the subtle nuances of the genre and apply them within said artist’s own mission statement, rather than simply default to dutiful and slavish emulation. One artist who envisions his mission and executes both proactively and above and beyond the call of duty is Charlotte, North Carolina’s Phillip “Hick’ry” Hawkins (who took his professional surname from the late rhythm and blues pioneer, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins). That he has opted to do so with a much maligned genre (country music) as an integral part of the foundation of his mission statement is testimony to both his resolve and capability. Much of Hawkins’ determination can be attributed to his years of service in military intelligence with the United States Navy, including a tour of active duty from 1986 to 1990, followed by a ten year stint in the reserves, with occasional returns to active duty as needed. During his tenure with the Navy, Hawkins researched, produced and wrote intelligence manuals and research publications. That experience would serve him well as he embarked upon his current career in the wake of his honorable discharge in 2000. Although it was literally the final holdout amongst major musical genres to succumb to an aesthetic slump brought about by the infiltration of commercial concerns, country music to date has endured the most protracted slump in all of music; one that began with the collapse of the New Traditionalist movement in the early 1990s. Among the byproducts of this development have been an shift on emphasis from music to the physical attributes of the artist, coupled with a galling and intolerable lack of respect and/or deference to the work of the idiom’s most beloved and respected pioneers. To be certain, there have been occasional sympathetic overtures from a select few within its ranks (such as Toby Keith, Trace Adkins, Hank Williams III and such ongoing successful stalwarts as George Strait and Hank Williams Jr.). Nonetheless, any tangible evidence of a resultant musical solution has remained sporadic, at best. It is at this juncture that Hawkins’ military experience brings a most welcome and different dimension to the concept of warfare. For indeed, his work in music is steeped in both musical and spiritual warfare. Although his three CD releases to date (including the acclaimed Unleashed) are sadly out of print at the moment, each is rife with original material that in some respects fulfills the often quoted proclamation made by the late, great Walter Brennan in The Guns Of Will Sonnett: “No brag, just fact”. The fact is that Hawkins’ original material is at once diverse, all encompassing and in solidarity with the vision of those who set the standard of excellence, yet refreshing in its wry wit and rich imagery. On one hand, Hawkins’ subtle humor is very much classic country with attributes of universal identification, evidenced by the variation on the theme espoused by Porter Wagoner in The Cold Hard Facts Of Life in Hawkins’ Widest Trailer In The Lot or the Bobby Bare-like celebratory atmosphere of Alligator Britches. Conversely, his more serious endeavors range from such status quo expressions of solidarity as Country Pickin’ Guitar Man and Turn The Jukebox Up to moving tributes to such recently fallen giants as Waylon Jennings (Waylon) and Johnny Cash (Goodnight John). And for no nonsense, emotion-wrenching pathos at its most impacting, Hawkins’ unlikely yet ingenious plea for animal rescue, Forever Home is difficult to beat. Yet as such masters of the idiom as Cash, Jennings and Hank Williams Sr. were fully aware, theirs was a journey of ongoing internal conflict, brought about by what is known in evangelical circles as spiritual warfare. Folk rock legends the Highwaymen astutely termed such a dichotomy The Spirit & The Flesh. That Hawkins understands such distinctions is evidenced by such anointed and compelling Gospel-themed material as Devil Train, Sinner, Holy Ghost Conductor and the straightforward lament, Sold My Soul And Ain’t Got Paid. Although Hawkins in recent months has maintained a higher than usual profile via his participation in such unlikely projects as a Burger King television commercial and as a commentator in the landmark June 2008 SCE-TV documentary, Juke Joints and Honky Tonk Legends, he is returning to his first love of music throughout July, August and the early weeks of September as part of Cockabilly Records’ 2010 Coney Island Cockabilly Roadshow, alongside Jason and the Punknecks, Guitar Bomb, the Holy Roller Sideshow and Viva Le Vox. Tour stops include Brooklyn, Buffalo, Lexington, Knoxville, Gainesville, Athens, Myrtle Beach, Providence, Baltimore and several other locations. “Hope you dig it”, said Hawkins in the matter of fact manner that has come to define his comparatively brief yet impressive legacy. Indeed, as one of Hawkins’ tongue in check musical excursions irrefutably demonstrates, there is much to dig and much to whet any musical Appetite. .. .. Military Service: The artist known as Hick'ry Hawkins served in the U.S. Navy from 1986 until 2000 in the field of Naval Intelligence. Hick'ry was assigned to the USS Coral Sea as the (1) Intelligence Specialist (2) Nuclear Weapons Technician and (3) Strike Warfare Operations Intelligence Analyst. The artist was then assigned to the office of the Secretary of Defense and took part in the Bosnia, Haiti, Somalia and Gulf War 1 and Gulf War 2 theaters of operation. The artist entered civilian life in 2000 with an honorable discharge and the designation of Petty Officer Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class -
