  • Bio

Hipnautica, is a transcendent collection of inspiration. led by, Sky, one of Austin's first solo electronic composer/musicians and a long time resident musician. Despite long time roots in Austin, Sky was born in Hawaii, and raised in the Philippines and has traveled all over the United States and the world, bringing different influences together from his travels. Hipnautica presents a plethora of distinctly rich textures, and a wide range of musical styles. Seamlessly fusing multiple schools of creative thought and musical disciplines, Sky weaves together a blanket of musical and visuals that can wrap around you like a cocoon, and transport you to other worlds. Through an experiential processes over the last four years, Hipnautica has challenged musicians, dancers, artists, performers, club owners and audiences to not only think outside the box... but to not live within a box. "The world is a beautiful place, if only you'd open your eyes to see... ~sky" Hipnautica challenges us to face our fears to bring our dreams to life. Hipnautica says this project should not be thought of as a band... it is "collective tribe" unbridled by genre classification. We present eclectic performances and music that speaks from our souls incorporating members as each show calls for it and as time permits. Not every member will attend every performance. Some performers appreciate and relate to different aspects of this project and thus are compelled and inspired in different ways. Like a musical chameleon Sky, constantly explores innovation and asks that you support this aspect of this project first and foremost. We hope that you will relate to some of what we do and perhaps find inspiration from all that we do. As artists our goal is to be true to the creative process and Sky, challenges us to constantly explore new ideas to express ourselves in ways that reflect the personalities of our tribe... we hope you join us on this journey. The original Hipnautica was started in 2003 with Trick Appeal Galore (Sunny Webb) and Jordan Jones but unfortunately after a year of working on 6 songs which Sky wrote in 6 days, patience faltered and Sky imploded. So he took a year to regroup and during that time re-evaluated his writing & recording processes, simplified things, and explored a new approach to break the "band" paradigm. After a trip to China and near fatal incident, Sky unlocked new inspiration and the child artist within him was awakened. He quickly gathered new equipment and restructured his approach... going back to his roots as a solo electronic musician. Realizing that if he could get out into the public eye he would find kindred spirits and warriors to join him and strengthen his independent efforts. In 2006, after his first public appearance in over 10 years, after just 6 months a stellar clan of musicians, artists and dancers started to assemble... and thus a new Hipnautica was born. The organic collective, a creative tribe, an ever changing project that has performed over 50+ shows in the first year, and has hit 5 different states... we sit poised on the edge and look towards the future with deep appreciation for all of you that have supported this project. <table style="text-align: center;"><tr><td><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=7578721&user_name=hipnautica&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=1&columns=4" width="722" height="178"><param name="movie" value="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=7578721&user_name=hipnautica&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=1&columns=4" /></object></td></tr><tr><td><a style="font-size: 14px; text-decoration: none; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" href="http://www.etsy.com">Etsy</a><br/><a style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; text-decoration: none;" href="http://hipnautica.etsy.com">hipnautica</a></td></tr></table>

Sky writes... "I have so much passion for music that I don't tie my hands behind my back. I let my mind fly and I create music...and I let the rest of the world worry about classifications and genres. Life is too short to live within confines set forth by record companies, I am an artist... so I will create. I hope you find inspirations within my inspirations."

General Information

Hipnautica in it's currently form reformed on Oct 13th 2006 but represents over 15+ years of personal development from one of Austin's original solo electronic musicians, Kelly "Sky" Reed, often referred to as the "wizard of oz" and a "musical chameleon". Sky, an original old skool electronic musician from the late 80's and early 90's has been based in Austin TX for several years but is a world traveler and brings with him these influences into his music and art. Today Hipnautica encompasses and presents the talents of many different musicians, performers, dancers, and artists to present unique thematic presentations.

"We are like a musical carousel, seamlessly transmigrating genres and styles from our sorted past. We blend dark undertones with lighter overtones with and mash hard electronic and tribal beats as we blend psychedelic and trance inducing harmonics with world influences to create a sound which is distinctly hypnotic. It's been my intention to present the highest quality sound within the underground but time and budget are often working against us. We constantly strive to infuse new concepts and ideally hope to be recognized for creating a unique tone. At times we are harsh and in your face with pounding beats and at times we passively meander through organic layers but always intended to create supernatural soundscapes to inspire our audience."

Hipnautica is by all accounts more like an "collective tribe" rather than a "band", unbridled by genre classification. Sky presents eclectic performances and music that speaks from his soul and incorporates members as the show calls for and as their time permits. Not every member will attend every performance. Some performers appreciate and relate to different aspects of this project and thus are compelled and inspired in different ways. We seamlessly weave through a multitude of styles to create an original hybrid sound. Constantly exploring the creative proces, Sky asks that you support this aspect of this project first and foremost. We hope that you will relate to some of what we do and perhaps find inspiration from all that we do. We are currently independently fueled by our passion and the financial support of our fans, sponsors, and venues that hire us. We deeply appreciate your support. As artists we will constantly explore new ideas to express ourselves in ways that reflect the personalities of our tribe... we hope you join us on this journey.

The original Hipnautica was started in 2003 with Trick Appeal Galore (Sunny Webb) and Jordan Jones but unfortunately after a year of working on 6 songs patience faltered and Sky imploded. So he took a year to regroup and during that time re-evaluated his writing & recording processes, simplified things, and explored a new approach to the "band" paradigm. After a trip to China and near fatal incident, Sky unlocked new inspiration and the artist within him awakened from a deep slumber. He quickly gathered new equipment and restructured his approach... going back to his roots as a solo electronic musician, realizing that if he could get out into the public eye he would find kindred spirits and musical warriors to join him and strengthen his independent efforts. In less than 6 months a stellar clan of musicians, artists and dancers started to assemble many of which are still with him on stage or in life as friends today... and thus a new Hipnautica was born.

An organic collective, a creative tribe, an ever changing project that has performed over 50+ shows in the first year, and hit 5 different states... we sit poised on the edge and look towards the future with deep appreciation for all of you that have supported this project.

THISTLE, the second in the quadratic series was released on May 14, 2010 and now available at our shows and online. Thistle, a six song EP, focus on a more positive energy inspired by electronica, synth pop and trance with classical overtones and world undertones delivering a more uplifting style featuring live piano, viola, violin, cello and beautiful vocal harmonies. Dedicated to the element of Air, Thistle presents a more natural sound while still being heavy in electronics. Featuring songs such as WHISPER WALKER which compares the love of a women to walking within inspiration, BREATHING IN YOUR LOVE which is illustrates the fine line of love and obsession, THISTLE talks of the world being a beautiful place if only we'd open our eyes to see, FOLD INTO ME asks for your unforgiving love, LUSCIOUS OXYGEN & SOUL FIRE take you through a multifaceted instrumental trance electronica to dance to or groove on the highway.

EXILE which was the first EP in the quadratic series, was released in the summer of 2009, is dedicated to a more mechanical hard edge sound, representing the FIRE within and inspired by the industrial & ebm underground with heavy rock, and of course world influences. The title song, EXILE was written specifically for this album just days before release and carries this album. Also featuring DESTINATION IS UNKNOWN & CYANIDE which are two of my oldest songs and inspired by FRONT 242, VOLATILE which was inspired by My Life With the THRILL KILL KULT, and a beautiful Dark World piece I wrote for a show with ANDROID LUST on the Devils Day, CONVULSION featuring our opera singer PIXIE.
We are also starting to finalize the second in the series, THISTLE which will feature much more uplifting, trance, electronica dance songs and dedicated to the element of AIR.

HIPNAUTICA WAS ANNOUNCED AS ONE OF THE TOP TEN PERFORMING GOTHIC/INDUSTRIAL BANDS IN AUSTIN. We thank all our fans for their support and helping us garner this much appreciated recognition.
