About me:

I am James Debono a journalist by profession with a past of green and leftist activism. Presently am working as a journalist with Maltese newspaper Maltatoday. I have a Masters degree in history from the University of Malta where I specialised in popular culture and studies on the Inquisition Tribunal. I also had an experience working on popular TV shows-an experience which left me very sceptical on the way the populist media works. I am influenced by the ground breaking works of Michel Foucault but I also owe a lot to social theorists like Laclau, Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser and Karl Marx. Politically I consider myself as a radical democrat with green and civil-libertarian leanings. I have strong views on civil rights especially because I live in a country which lags behind other European countries in these matters. Land speculation is the greatest threat facing the Maltese environment. Confronting rising racism and xenophobia is another important issue in Malta. So is the defence of public services and public land from private interests. Although I believe that another world is possible beyond capitalism, I am inclined to green politics which is based on offering concrete remedies in the "here and now." My music tastes are varied but my favourites are punk bands like The Clash, The Jam and the more recent Chumbawamba. I also find Bob Dylan one of the most inspiring song writers of all time. My favourite fiction authors are Gabriel Garzia Marquez, Zadi Smith, Aldous Huxley, and Umberto Eco. Spiritually I am inspired by Zen philosphy, Christian liberation theology and science itself which keeps me in awe of how the universe works. I am now married to my beloved companion and the love of my life, Sue and I have a son.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who wants to discuss politics, history and ideas.
