"Mighty warrior" is the meaning and image that the name "Jelani Kamau" would invoke in the minds of many Africans; in due time, the world of reggae will recognize the music of this artist in a similarly powerful light. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Jelani has always had music in his life, playing the saxophone from age 7 and singing in his church's youth choir by the age of 9. His love for the spiritual vibe and rhythm of reggae music also emerged at a young age, and over the years his voice and vision grew naturally and elementally, transforming what began as a mere hobby into something much greater. Friends and family, upon hearing his ever-maturing songwriting and singing, urged the artist to take his talents to a more professional plane. Soon, Jelani began landing on shows alongside greats such as Sizzla, Anthony B., Everton Blender, Culture, Bunny Wailer, Frankie Paul, and Glen Washington, and voicing dubplates and performing at dancehalls for sound systems from NY to Antigua, from Florida to Switzerland. With Black consciousness and social commentary at the forefront, Jelani's music is as much about upliftment as it is entertainment. In "Beholden", produced by legend Dean Fraser, he soulfully proclaims and defends the virtues of Black women and their importance to the family and community, while in "Spiritual War", he laments the inability of world leaders to 'find another way to resolve different ideologies'. Thru these songs we begin to get a taste for the depths of Jelani's convictions and songwriting, the versatility of his delivery and the richness of his vocals. With initial releases "Beholden", and the co-produced "Searching For Royalty" (recorded at the historic Tuff Gong Studio), hitting the airwaves as far off as the UK, Jelani has embarked on a mission to help heal a troubled world and uplift our downtrodden communities. This dynamic voice has been chained for far too long, and is determined to spread powerful, melodic and captivating messages of justice and righteous livity throughout the reggae community and beyond.
