Bio
Josh Johnston studied Popular Music in the University of Salford, graduating as a pianist, band leader and composer. He is well-known as a versatile musician. He was pianist in the band of Birr singer/songwriter Roesy for six years, and has performed on stage and record with Kila, Declan O’Rourke, Stewart Agnew, Hank Wedel, Breda Mayock, Noelie McDonnell, Irish tenor Karl Scully and others. He is currently to be heard regularly touring with SJ McArdle, Keith Mullins, Derek O'Gorman, Peadar King and Ronan Swift when he's not performing his own music.. He is the resident organist at the Unitarian Church in Dublin. He released his second solo CD, Asylum Harbour in 2008 and a duo disc with jazz (and classical) violinist David MacKenzie, Notes Home, earlier in the same year... "Sometimes I think too much" (Paul Simon).. Where Asylum Harbour hoped to answer (or at least voice in lyrics) some of the questions of his particular human experience, Josh's new CD comes at a time when he realised that sometimes there were both not enough words and too many words to provide calm in this topsy-turvy world - in these times we need a moment of quiet.. So here instead is a piano-solo CD recorded two days after the end of the big freeze in January 2010 in St. Peters' Church of Ireland in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. it was recorded, mixed and mastered by Brian Masterson and produced by Josh himself. .. The CD features 11 original compositions, a new composition by long-time collaborator David MacKenzie and a unique interpretation of The Late Traiin by Roesy. Maintainiing a gentle sense of calm throughout, it nonetheless has moments of drama and a romantically wintery atmosphere. Josh's wide range of musical influences (jazz - Keith Jarrett, Dave Brubeck; folk - Micheal O'Suilleabhain, Donal Lunny; classical - Satie, Faure, Grieg, choral music ) come through in his piano playing whether it's the dreamily melodic melodies of A Light In The Dark Of Night and the various Nightsongs (inspired by a time in life when Josh could get away with mprovising on the piano late at night) scattered through the CD or the spontaneous development of Cimiez and Saving A Life (large parts of which were improvised in the studio) .. Josh looks forward to promoting this CD in Autumn 2010 performing shows mixing songs and instrumentals from Asylum Harbour and The Shape Of Things. I heard your song "Asylum Harbour" on CalmRadio and you're the man! Thank you so much! Your music is amazing!! But it would be awesome to have your songs on YouTube! I know that you'd be more popular that way, but you're not on there yet. Peace and blessings man :D
