About a month or so ago I was interviewed for a podcast on Threadbanger.com.
I love this website as it's what inspired me to go head first into the DIY/handmade life style I've come to know and love. Rob and Corinne, the hosts of the show, were delightful and very fun to meet and talk to. They have graciously included the tutorial I filmed for the podcast into the Threadbanger blog, mapping out the instructions.
If you ever feel the need to turn those old buttons/pins/badges you have lying around the house into fabulous and unique jewelry, well, grab a hammer and check out the tutorial!
Earlier this morning my dad sent me this article on Indian children working in sweat shops to make embroidered shirts. While the article doesn't really go into the responsibility the corporations should take in such circumstances it does make a point out that consumers also have a responsibility when purchasing such wares.
As a consumer I have to admit that there are times when I have bought an article of clothing because it was super cheap (and cute), but those days are behind me now. Even before I opened my own shop of handmade goods I was in favor of supporting small businesses and people who make their own products. Now that I am officially in that pool of hand-makers articles like this burn me up even more.
I'm not out-sourcing.. My products come from me and me alone. Buy handmade.
....aside from being asked for a custom order, being told that you can do pretty much whatever you want with the design.
I recently had a customer ask me to make her one of my Kristine, the Dino embroidered shirts where really the only thing she wanted for sure was for it to be in a men's large in either black or green. As long as the rest of it was in contrasting colors she didn't mind letting me play with the rest. So, I pulled out a men's large green shirt and BAM! Off to work I went! I'm really happy with how it turned out. I hope she is, too!
