It all started at the end of the 80s with cassette tapes. I recorded off the radio and played at parties - as a cassette tape DJ. Things really got going in 1990. Bought myself two technics 1210ers and an L.E.M mixer and from that day on lived for three years on bread, water and mixing. I opened up an illegal cocktail bar with some friends in the youth centre in Göttingen around then too (juzi). Between 1990 and 1993 it was the only techno club in town. It was there where 3.Raum and others played their first ever live sets - still a good friend to this day. As I was already playing a lot in Hamburg at that time, I decided to move there in 1994 and formed the rather special party collective U-Site with a few other guys. Since then we’ve organised around 100 raves, often illegal ones - some of them legendary parties such as the first Hafengeburtstag (harbour birthday party) in Hamburg or the “sea U-site”, a rave which still takes place every year on the Baltic coast. In 1997 things got really exciting. Wanting to keep on doing and developing new things, we organised the first fusion festival on the site of the former Russian military airport in Lärz with a total of 800 guests. The year after that we set up the kulturkosmos e.V., the non-profit collective which still puts on the fusion festival to this day, raising funds for social projects such as youth work in the area where the festival takes place. When everything started going crazy I still had three projects: “der stern von afrika” with Andreas Krüger (3.Raum), “peak pilots” and “intact instinct”. I put out an album and lots of maxis, but because I was concentrating so much on kulturkosmos and fusion I just didn’t have the time to carry on producing. It’s a shame but it’s not all that bad, as I’ve always seen myself as more of a DJ. The fusion festival grew and grew and after long negotiations we were finally able to buy the large site in early 2003. From then on it was clear that we would make the fusion festival into something truly unique. In 2010 the number of guests was limited to 60,000 for the first time and within two weeks of tickets going on sale it was sold out. Only time will tell how the cultural monster will develop in future. As one of the two remaining founding members of the fusion, I am still involved in all important organisational processes, and am responsible for booking most of the electronic acts. I have been travelling around most of Europe (unfortunately not making it to some parts of Eastern Europe) with my box of records since 1990, and over the years I have developed my own style: playing with three 1210ers, one of which I only use to feed the beat with permanent loops. Vocal loops, drum loops, synth loops or wildly pitched pads. I stop at nothing, main thing is the flow. If the set-up is right and the promoter has organised a good night then I like to get out a DJ sample, pull loops from my records or sample my voice – something along those lines. I like to put on a good show you see, as I find that DJs who create something new are more exciting. I released another record at the end of 2009 and am planning in future to get into the studio more often. Those ideas need to be realised. Acker rec. 013 marcus carp vs, Deo&z-man overtighten nut e.p. I like it. And to conclude: a declaration of my love for vinyl! I will play vinyl for as long as it is around. I’m an intuitive DJ and love fumbling around hectically in my box for exactly the right record. And who cares if I have to lug around 30 kilos of music all the time. Doesn’t matter. Love is blind.
