THE LONG GOODBYE

Biography

The Long Goodbye is led by singer songwriter Alfie Bernardi, a talented multi instrumentalist who quotes Elliott Smith, Neil Young, Ryan Adams and Wilco as the band's main influences. His lyrics have been described as "haunting, introspective, and painfully real" and his voice as "unique, passionate and impossibly filled with emotion". After a successful career as a sideman in several bands, and sharing stages with the likes of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Chaka Khan and Paul Young, Alfie moved to the country and worked on a solo album that slowly evolved into The Long Goodbye sound, aided by guitarist Jake MacKay, and many other partners in crime.
Released in 2008, 'Whenever in ruins' was hailed by many as "the album to play when the whisky comes out" and "a fine collection of heartfelt songs, and the most evocative voice since Counting Crows' Adam Duritz". Spending most of their time in a stable-turned-recording studio in the Sussex countryside, Alfie and Jake plus bassist Adam and drummer Fionn are now writing the follow up to the newly released album "Darkness Leaves", which will further demonstrates their versatility and free-thinking style, and building up a cult following performing in many of the south coasts leading venues, having supported the likes of Viarosa, Hey Negrita, Two Fingers of Firewater and The Redlands Palomino Company and appeared live on Phil Jackson's BBC Sussex radio show. Together they craft reflective songs about lost love, hope, desolation and restlessness and take their all-night heartbreaks to the masses.

Press

"Interesting multi layered folk music for the now, put together by a group of clearly talented multi-instrumental musicians. Breathy vocals, hooks and harmonies a plenty, this album nods in many directions but confirms this local band have an identity of their own. A beautifully put together record, file next to Wilco & Sufjan Stevens. 7/10" JAMES GOLD, XYZ MAGAZINE.

"I really like this track because it is doing stuff in a very different way, which, when you listen to a lot of music in a very concentrated fashion, makes for a refreshing change." PHIL JACKSON, BBC SOUTHERN COUNTIES RADIO.

"All of their songs are self written and are of a consistently high standard. They are gifted musicians, with a style close to 1970's era country rock but with a modern edge. A band to keep an eye on!" MIKE MORRISON, MAVERICK MAGAZINE.

"The Long Goodbye produce a set which changes pace with regularity, yet bristles with quality. A band well worth watching." EAST MAGAZINE.

"A breath of fresh air...a band to warm the soul." CLAIRE LLOYD, KONG PROMOTIONS BRIGHTON.

"I really liked it. There is a fusion of very different things in there. I like the relaxed approach and it's kind of perfect for a rainy day." PAUL MEX, MEX ONE RECORDINGS. (Robert Wyatt, Wham etc.).

"The Long Goodbye, a cathartic dose of Ameri-rock post Wilco and Neil Young, were a welcome relief!" THE LATEST7 MAGAZINE

"Subtle tones of The Thrills with a shade of The Bluetones...the music takes you on a slightly psychedelic journey" ROSSCO PATRICK, RPM PRODUCTIONS.

"Alfie delivers a hardline lesson in melancholia via his beautiful voice; an instrument drenched in a deep understanding of matters-of-the-heart, his guitar expertly manipulated to tease-out the most ravishing accompaniment across songs that will move you in every way imaginable." NICK HUDSON, THE ACADEMY OF SUN.
