Bio
.. .. .. .. .......... .... .... .... .. .. .. .. FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ...... .. .. ...... .. .. Since bursting onto the scene in 1999 with Mos Def’s unforgettable “Ms. Fat Booty,” Ayatollah has evolved into one of hip-hop’s most reliable producers, crafting timeless tracks for the likes of Pharaohe Monch, Rakim, Talib Kweli, Royce Da 5’9”, Guru, and Sean Price. He’s also begun to step out of the shadows that often obsure the men behind the boards, releasing a series of acclaimed instrumental albums. Now, Tollah Music is proud to announce the latest full-length in this series, Cocoon. With Cocoon (available digitally on July 20), Tollah delivers another batch of soulful tracks for beat junkies, aspriring MCs, and hip-hop aficianados worldwide. .. .. While he’s been churning out a steady stream of music for over a decade, Cocoon marks a turning point for Ayatollah. “I’m going through a musical transformation,” he describes. “It’s a musical growth process, like a larvae going to a butterfly.” While fans can still expect the soulful sounds that have become his signature, Ayatollah dug deeper for Cocoon. Tracks like the sinister "Casino" and the chopped-up "Lonely Girl" show that Tollah has mastered the rare art of conveying moods and messages through instrumental music. As he explains, “I’ve gotten more creative, and my beats are getting better and better." -

In the world of instrumental hip-hop, Ayatollah needs no introduction. Since making his name producing tracks for hip-hop icons like Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Sean Price, Rakim, Smif N Wessun, Ghostface Killah, and Talib Kweli, the New York beatsmith has turned his attention to vocal-less music. “I get peace of mind from doing instrumental albums,” explains Tollah. “There’s no words to lead you in any one direction. Plus I don’t have to wait on rappers to finish the creations. I like the freedom of it.” After eight acclaimed instrumental collections, Ayatollah is proud to announce his first vinyl offering in over five years, Fingertips.
Musically, Fingetips reflects the gritty sound the producer has become known for. Horns blare, drums pound, basslines rumble, and vocal snippets drift in and out. “It’s raw, it’s cutting edge, and it’s soulful,” describes Tollah. As has been well-documented, Ayatollah still uses his trusty Akai MPC 60, meaning the music on the album did in fact come straight from the tips of some famously dusty fingers. Tollah Music will release Fingertips exclusively on vinyl and digital download on February 1st, 2011.
