I grew up in a house down a long and windy road through the woods in Peoria, Illinois, and every morning I woke up to the sunrise over the Illinois River. I spent my summers in Wisconsin growing up and getting my heart broken a few times, and on nights we snuck out late and came back early, the sun would hit the lake and the fog over the water would clear so quickly you could watch it as you walked across the open field. When I turned sixteen I found out that the sunrise is just as beautiful riding the early morning train in Chicago as the glow lights up Lake Michigan. I started writing songs alone in my room with an old guitar that had been my dad’s first instrument. Perhaps I played and sang too often and too loud for my aunt and uncle who I lived with at the time, but out of love, they encouraged me. I played my first show, thanked everyone for coming, and got hooked. But by 18, I was in New York City writing and playing, drinking and wandering the streets looking for love, for answers, for something. Some days I found it. Others I found only an empty room or an empty promise or an empty kiss. I found new people to write with, new songs to sing, new instruments, and new adventures. I joined a band called The District, produced a record for the first time, and found in them my New York family. Wrote ‘A Drop in the Ocean’ with Ron Pope and watched it take off only after we buried the song for a while. The sunrise became the punctuation at the end of a beautiful night more often than the start of a day, but I never stopped looking. I loved hard, chased that love around the country and then to Europe and back, and lost it somewhere in Harlem. I made my first record (Stumble) over the course of almost a year and closed the book on a few things I needed to say. Ran off to Los Angeles for a little while chasing dreams and found that there, the sun comes up over the mountains, shooting across the sky and lighting the ocean below…but LA is a lonely city, or at least it was for me, so I came back to New York where the sun comes up over New Jersey and sets over Brooklyn, and while the city never sleeps, sometimes it gets dark. I put together an EP of new songs (As Far As It Goes) in my bedroom in Harlem and then finished them in only a few days in Carmel, NY with my good friend Paul Hammer. Somewhere between these lines are all the songs you hear on this page. These songs are fact and fiction, but none are lies. Thank you for listening. Check me out on:
