  • THIS WEEK AT ZEBULON 8.2-8.8

    Hello Friends

July flew by with amazing shows from Sharon Van Etten, Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, Baye Kouyate, Mother of Fire, and a wonderful residency with Sir Richard Bishop. August is jam packed with new sounds from around the world and around the corner. Charlie Looker (extra life+Z's) will start a Sunday residency this week, Terenga will bring new sounds from Senegal, and AVANT GHETTO (quickly becoming one of the most popular regular nights at Zebulon) returns with Multitudes, Forma and David First.

    Monday August 2nd

    9PM

    DJ Brad Loving

Zebulon favorite Brad Loving returns with his amazing collection of records. Expect to hear beautiful sounds from West Africa mixed up with choice nuggets from his rock collection.

    Tuesday August 3rd

    9PM

Elliot Bergman (NOMO) DJ SET http://nomomusic.com

His DJ sets slip between genres with ease. Finding the common thread between West African Funk, psychedelic Brazilian music, Spiritual Jazz and Kraut Rock might not be an easy task, but it seems to be Bergman's mission. The Boston Globe says of NOMO: "Whatever you call their music, it's got an infectious groove the makes it impossible to keep your hips from swaying."

    Wednesday August 4th

    9PM

AVANT GHETTO with Multitudes + Forma + David First

    Multitudes http://multitudesband.com

"The writhing, noisily precise post-hardcore of Brooklyn's Multitudes would have sounded right at home on SST in the mid-'80s, when bands like Black Flag, the Minutemen, and Saccharine Trust were mashing up punk and jazz and coming up with their own fiery response to mainstream fusion."

    -- Time Out New York

    Forma http://myspace.com/formasounds

Forma's primary influence is at the intersection of electronic based Krautrock (think early Kraftwerk, Cluster, Popul Vuh) and the explosion of late 70's early 80's underground synthesizer music grouped broadly under the umbrella term "Minimal Synth." They specialize in repetitive yet complex evolving structures of sound, producing a wholly improvised music driven by live drum machine programming, sychronized analog synths and spacious melodies.

    David First (Notekillers) http://myspace.com/davidfirst

As a composer First has created everything from finely crafted pop songs to long, severely minimalist droneworks. His performances often find him sitting trance-like without seeming to move a muscle, unless he is playing with his psychedelic punk band, Notekillers, when he is a whirling blur of hyperactive energy. First has been called "a fascinating artist with a singular technique" in The New York Times, and "a bizarre cross between Hendrix and La Monte Young" in The Village Voice.

    Thursday August 5th

    9PM

    DJ Erin Weckerle

She's a Williamsburg rennaisance woman and a Zebulon regular. Whether running her Sodafine Boutique, Purldrop line, or playing her favorite soul records, she brings a refined aesthetic with a few surprises to the table. Tonight she'll DJ and bring along some surprise guests as well.

    Friday August 6th

    9PM

    Terenga + DJ Tyler

Terenga is a promising new project from Senegal via Brooklyn. Weekend nights at Zebulon have a tendency to turn into dance parties as the night progresses, and we're excited to move to these new sounds. DJ Tyler steps out from behind the bar and spins his favorite LPs from Africa.

    Saturday August 07

    9PM

Winston Troy + Laughing Eye Weeping Eye + Madam Robot + Me and Doug

    http://www.myspace.com/laughingeyeweepingeye

With reverbed-out riffs and dreamlike cowgirls songs, Winston Troy is somewhere between a late night road trip and a living sound painting, created by lone member/performer Kelley Vaughn-Kauffman. She plays electric guitar, sings and shakes a groovy fun feather on top of live-looped background sounds to create layers of repetitive musical incantations that sound like a mysterious dark desert sunset.

    Sunday August 08

Charlie Looker + Dead Western + Travis Laplante

We are very excited to have Charlie Looker playing three sundays in August. He has become a staple of the Brooklyn experimental scene, playing with his band Extra Life, and Z's. Tonight he'll bring along Dead Western with their strange and beautiful California folk, and out-sax-man-extraodinaire Trav..is Laplante from the band Little Women. This is definitely not to be missed!
